Satyajit Ray
began with a group of artists and technicians who were largely newcomers
to film. Through out his long career of about 37 years and 36 films,
his crew changed a little. He had the same editor for all his films,
just three cinematographers, and two art directors.
The crew was under no permanent contract or organisation. And yet,
the crew members and actors always made themselves available for his
films. It was partly due to this obligation that Ray moved from one
film to another rapidly, making about one film a year.
His son Sandip Ray gradually became his
most valued assistant. "The best assistant I ever had",
Ray told an interviewer.
